Go to Friends → Find Friends to search by name or username, or browse suggested connections ranked by shared communities. Sending a friend request lets you message each other directly.
Friends is a two-way connection (both people accept), used for direct messaging. Following is one-directional - you can follow someone to see their posts in your feed without them following you back.
